Meaning
Shiloh was an ancient city in the hill country of Ephraim that became an important center of Israel’s worship and the location of the tabernacle.
Biblical Usage
After Israel entered Canaan, the tabernacle was established at Shiloh, where the congregation gathered and the land was distributed among the tribes. Shiloh subsequently became an important center of Israel’s religious life.
The books of Samuel associate Shiloh with Eli, the priesthood, Samuel, and the ark. Later Scripture refers to Shiloh as an example of a place where the LORD’s sanctuary had been established but which suffered judgment because of Israel’s wickedness.
