Meaning
Gleaning is the gathering of grain or other produce left behind after the main harvest.
Biblical Usage
Gleaning was an established agricultural practice under the Law of Moses. Landowners were instructed not to gather every part of their harvest, leaving portions for the poor, strangers, widows, and fatherless.
Ruth’s work in the fields of Boaz illustrates this practice. She gleaned during both the barley harvest and the wheat harvest while remaining with Naomi.
