Meaning
Baal is the name used in Scripture for a Canaanite deity worshiped by various peoples in the biblical period. The Hebrew word baal can mean “lord,” “master,” or “owner,” but Baal as a biblical proper name refers to the deity and his associated worship.
Biblical Usage
Baal worship appears repeatedly in Israel’s history as a form of worship contrary to the worship of the LORD. Scripture records the establishment of Baal worship, the construction of Baal’s altars, and the activity of prophets of Baal.
The account of Elijah on Mount Carmel records a direct confrontation between Baal worship and the worship of the LORD. The prophets later use Baal as a major example of Israel’s departure from the LORD.
