Meaning
To apply oil or another substance to a person or object; in Scripture, also to set apart or appoint by anointing.
Biblical Usage
In Scripture, people and objects were anointed with oil in several contexts. Priests were anointed for their sacred service, and kings were anointed in connection with their appointment to rule.
The Bible also uses anointing language for God’s appointment and empowerment. Saul and David were anointed as kings of Israel, while the New Testament uses the term in reference to Jesus Christ and also speaks of anointing among believers.
